The Exit 8 developer mentions possibility of a sequel
The anomaly-spotting horror walking simulator The Exit 8 has been a growing hit ever since it launched on Steam on November 29. In a recent interview, the game’s developer has mentioned the possibility of a sequel that would take place in a new environment.
The Exit 8 is the debut title of Japanese indie developer Kotake Create. The short but thrillingly addictive game has you wandering the seemingly endless passageway of a Japanese subway station, looking for exit number 8. The rules are simple, you look for anomalies while walking, and must turn back as soon as you spot one. If there is no anomaly, you must not turn back. The liminal space-inspired game sold an impressive 30,000 copies within a day of its launch and has been growing in popularity ever since, proving to be a favorite among streamers in particular.
In an interview with Game*Spark, Kotake Create mentioned that, although they have been receiving requests to update The Exit 8 with new anomalies, they do not plan to do more than bug fixes in the future. On the other hand, they add that if they were to make new content, it would be in the form of a sequel set in a new environment.
The Exit 8 developer also talks about their influences, mentioning titles such as the horror indie game I’m On Observation Duty, Hideo Kojima’s P.T. and the adventure game Twelve Minutes. They wanted to develop a game with a looping system that combines “spot the difference” gameplay and horror, and chose the game’s setting because they had always found underground passages eerie.
Kotake Create is currently working on another action-adventure game titled Strange Shadow planned for release in 2025.
The Exit 8 is available on Steam.
