Attack on Titan lawsuit: Man taken to court for comparing a woman to the Cart Titan

A Taiwanese man was found liable for defamation of character after comparing a woman’s appearance to that of the Cart Titan from the Attack on Titan manga/anime series.

According to Record China, Taiwanese media reported on November 21 that a man was sued for 12,000 TWD (about $380 USD) after posting a defamatory comment on a woman’s social media post. The man had apparently likened the woman to the Cart Titan, a quadrupedal titan that appears in the Attack on Titan series. The Cart Titan has an elongated face with an unproportionately large jaw and mouth, and is generally regarded as “ugly” to a comical degree among fans of the series.

The woman decided to take legal action, filing a lawsuit against the commenter. Another user who echoed the same comment and added a statement that included sexual implications was also fined for around $790 and sentenced to 25 days of detention. According to the report, the Taiwanese public was largely sympathetic to the plaintiff, with many deeming it inappropriate to liken a person to the Cart Titan. A Taiwanese lawyer commented that the court likely determined the act of comparing a person to the Cart Titan to be malicious and defamatory.

On the other hand, the case has prompted the creation of memes about the Cart Titan now being a “court-approved” level of ugly.
