Yakuza producers introduce “biggest play spot up to date” in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth with Dondoko Island
Sega and the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio revealed details about Dondoko Island, a new play spot in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth on October 26. The producers have described it as the biggest in the series’ history and seem very confident about its content.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is scheduled for release on January 26, 2024 for the PC (Steam), PS4/PS5/Xbox One/Xbox Series X|S.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is the latest installment in the Like a Dragon series. This will be the first game to take the story outside of Japan, as one of the stages of the game is Hawaii. The story is about Ichiban Kasuga, who visits Hawaii in search of his mother, reaching the foreign land with literally nothing to his name (or body), and Kazuma Kiryu, who takes on the challenge of fighting the “last battle of his life”.
The game has various Hawaii-related activities in store, such as the Crazy Delivery and Sujimon Battle minigames which had been revealed so far. But this time around, the new play spot called Dondoko Island has been unveiled. In the trailer, the “cozy DIY lifestyle” concept of the island resort and the various activities are explained.
On Dondoko Island, you’ll be able to do things such as cleaning up trash, catching fish with a harpoon and catching bugs with a net. You can sell the items you’ve collected at the island’s stores and make purchases. Furthermore, you can also build a house on the island and decorate it with furniture bought at the stores or made from resources you collected. By developing the island and raising its appeal as a resort, you can earn money by welcoming tourists. On the other hand, there also seem to be bad guys who attack the island, so you need to ward them away and protect your island.
Additionally, the island has online elements, so it may be possible to visit other player’s islands in-game. The trailer reveals a mini map of Dondoko Island, and it appears to be quite vast, consisting of various areas such as Gachapin Beach, Hills, Dondoko Falls and others. The UI displays the time of day, and it seems that daytime and nighttime will switch automatically as you spend time on the island.
According to Masayoshi Yokoyama, representative of the Ryu ga Gotoku Studio, Dondoko Island will be one of the largest play spots in the series’ history. The director of the game, Ryosuke Horii, also commented that Dondoko Island alone can be enjoyed for a long time, so it seems that Dondoko Island is one of the play spots that the developers are especially confident about. The creative house-building and online elements will surely be a fresh addition to the game that many will enjoy.
