Release of Tokyo Stories, 3D pixel art game set in a deserted Tokyo gets postponed

Drecom announced that the release of their work in progress adventure game Tokyo Stories has been postponed to an undetermined date. Tokyo Stories was originally scheduled to be released in 2023 for PC (Steam) and console (TBA).

Tokyo Stories is a 3D adventure game set in the city of Tokyo where everyone has disappeared. The main character wanders through the vanishing Tokyo in search of her best friend who has suddenly disappeared. Along the way, the player will encounter another youth who unexpectedly appears in the supposedly empty Tokyo and go through a series of mysterious experiences while searching for clues that may lead to the missing best friend.

Although details of the game have not been disclosed, the story is apparently expected to bare its fangs and develop in unexpected directions. What kind of story will unfold in the eerie yet mysterious Tokyo?

The game is distinguished by the unique visuals that combine pixel art and 3D art. The color palette, lighting and the way objects move in the game have all been carefully designed to convey the lonely yet gentle atmosphere of the city.

Tokyo Stories uses a fixed camera system, which was used in titles such as the original Resident Evil and has the advantage of letting the developers show each scene of their world from what they consider the ideal point of view. This camera system will surely allow players to enjoy the distinctive visuals of the game to the fullest. The producer of this title is Yuki Ikeda, who used to work for Sony Interactive Entertainment and directed the title rain, which was also a game with a unique art style and fixed camera system.

Regarding the postponement of the release of Tokyo Stories, Ikeda explained that it was because the scope of what he wanted to do and convey has expanded. He stated that development is ongoing with the goal of “delivering an experience that will leave a lasting impression on the players.” This likely means that the postponement is due to the expansion of the game’s scale. A demo version of the game will be available to play at the Japanese indie game event BitSummit Let’s Go 2023, suggesting that development has been progressing to some extent.
