The Mega Man Battle Network series is a tactical action RPG set in a society heavily connected via network technology. In each title, the main character ventures back and forth between the real world and the cyber world. The battles have combined elements of a card game and an action RPG, taking place in an area divided in tiles, and are fought by utilizing Battle Chips. This game was a pioneer of its genre in many aspects, such as dealing with the theme of the real and virtual world and its deck-building elements.
In addition to remastered graphics, the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection introduces a variety of new elements, including online functions such as Public Match, Trade and online tournaments. Other additional features include a gallery where one can view illustrations and concept art and a music player which contains the original soundtrack.
One week after the release of this title, the Mega Man series official Twitter account reported that physical copies were out of stock on many locations. They apologized to users, announcing that they will be increasing production for the reshipment scheduled for the end of April.
According to Famitsu’s Game Sales Ranking for the week of April 10 to April 16, the Nintendo Switch version ranked first in Japan with an estimated 52,375 units sold, while the PS4 version ranked fifth with an estimated 7,871 units sold (Both numbers are for physical copies of the game). Based on overall data, the Nintendo Switch and PS4 versions sold an estimated 60,000 units combined in just two days since release.
On Steam, Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection Vol. 1 hit 7,843 concurrent players immediately after its release. Since then, the game continues to record more than 3,000 concurrent players daily (SteamDB), which indicates that the title enjoys great popularity even on Steam alone.
At the time of this writing, 93% of the 407 reviews on the Steam store have been positive, achieving “Very Positive” status. The users were pleased with the remastered classic, and enjoyed having the opportunity to replay or newly try out this classic series. The implementation of online features and the fact that the game was ported without major problems were also highly praised.
The Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 are now available on PC (Steam), PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
