Heaven Burns Red is an RPG developed by Wright Flyer Studios and Key. The main scenario for the game is written by Jun Maeda, known for titles such as Air and Clannad. The game takes place in a world that is being attacked by mysterious extra-terrestrial life-forms called Cancer. Conventional weapons have no effect on the Cancer and, as a result, humanity is driven to the brink of extinction.

In the midst of this crisis, humanity succeeds in developing a new type of weapon that has the power to damage the Cancer called Seraph. Young girls who are able to wield these new weapons are enlisted to a military base that is located within a school campus, and players follow the battles and daily lives of the girls from the viewpoint of the main protagonist Ruka.

Heaven Burns Red celebrated its first anniversary on February 10, and is currently holding a campaign to mark the occasion. Since the start of this campaign, the number of concurrent users on the Steam version has skyrocketed. It used to hover between 2,000 and 4,000 players, but since the start of the campaign, the number has peaked at over 20,000 users on multiple days (SteamDB).

A major factor for the increase in popularity is likely due to the event’s collaboration with the anime Angel Beats! The event’s story was written by Jun Maeda, co-founder of the visual novel brand Key. Maeda also wrote the original script for the anime and was involved in the music. Fans of the anime are sure to be excited by the fact that Jun Maeda himself worked on the story of the collaboration event.

This collaboration also includes a special gacha, a first anniversary login bonus, and a free daily login gacha. As for future plans, a live mode in which users can play a rhythm game with the title’s songs is scheduled to be launched on February 24, and part two of the main story’s fourth chapter is expected to go live on April 28.
