Palworld: Can Pals actually die of overwork? Player orchestrates cruel experiment to find out

Palworld is all about making efficient use of Pals to aid you in various tasks and help sustain and expand your bases. However, Pals are not machines – they can experience stress, illness and death, and how you treat them influences how they will work. To find out whether Pals can die from being severely overworked, one user conducted and documented a cruel experiment – exposing Pals to harsh working conditions while denying them sleep.

Post translation: A labor reform. Through the Monitoring Stand, you can change settings so that Pals work like hell. I want to see if they can die from being overworked, so I’m going to set them to “Super Hard Working” and have them do the labor-intensive task of stone cutting.

Upon setting up a mass production site for stone, X user @zawa59783293 proceeded to make all their test subject Pals work at the “Super Hard Working” setting using the Monitoring Stand that can be unlocked through the Technology panel at level 15. Under this setting, Pals get tasks done very quickly, but become much more prone to stress and disease.

But that’s not all, as the user also found a trick to prevent Pals from sleeping (so that they work continuously) at night by minimizing in-game Day Time Speed and maximizing Night Time Speed to disrupt the day-night cycle. This can be done by accessing Custom Difficulty settings.

Post translation: One hour has passed since I implemented the “Super Hard Working” labor reform. Subjects appear to have developed Weakness, Stomach Ulcers, Colds, and stress eating. I added 1776 eggs to battle the stress eating. As for cold medicine, I can’t afford such a luxury, so I’ll have them make do with hot springs and tough it out.

After one hour of working super hard with no sleep, the Pals could already be seen developing the typical Ailment status effects that come with high stress levels in Palworld. But the experiment continued.

Post translation: It’s been about two hours. There have been 2 incidents of fractures. Their once-cheerful facial expressions have clearly fallen (this is well made), and they don’t seem to be enjoying their food…As soon as they sustain fractures and collapse, they get back up and return to their posts…it’s like they’re Japanese…

It seems that even after two hours of working in severe conditions while sustaining injuries and disease, the test subject Pals still continued doing as they’re told. In an update after a total of five hours had passed, almost all the Pals had developed depression. But despite showing all the signs of not being able to work any longer, the Pals kept going.

The final check-in came at the 8-hour mark, and it seems that aside from continuous depression and their sanity being at 0, the Pals were not expected to undergo any more significant changes, thus the experiment was brought to an end. Concluding their findings, the player observed that when severely overworked, Pals will not die but their performance will deteriorate significantly.

Post translation: 8 hours have passed. Sanity values remained at 0 for a long time and depression remained unchanged, so I’ve decided that continuing the experiment would be pointless. Result: Pals cannot die from being overworked but will be significantly impaired in performance. Also, since curing all the test subject Pals from their injuries and illnesses would be too much of a bother, I sold them all for 5076 gold coins. Thank you for your attention. I will be back with new experiments.

Palworld is available for the PC (Steam), Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
