Splatoon 3 uses AMD’s “Super Resolution” technology which will be in the upcoming Splatoon 3: Splatfest World Premiere

It appears that Nintendo’s upcoming multiplayer shooter Splatoon 3 makes use of AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology. Pre-loading for the Splatoon 3: Splatfest World Premiere, an early demo of the game, has begun, and it contains copyright information regarding FSR.

Splatoon 3 is the latest title in Nintendo’s popular multiplayer shooting series. Players take the form of mysterious humanoid squids and battle it out with their ink shooting weapons. There are modes like the 4v4 Turf War, the cooperative Salmon Run Next Wave, and the single player Hero Mode. The upcoming title will also introduce new weapons, stages, and customization options.

Splatoon 3: Splatfest World Premiere is an early demo event for Splatoon 3 that will run on August 27 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. PT and is available for free as its own download. Pre-loads for the game are already available. With Nintendo Switch games, it’s possible to check the copyright notices for games from the home screen. This can be used to check things like what kind of technologies are being licensed for a game, and in this case, revealed Splatoon 3: Splatfest World Premiere uses AMD’s FSR 1.0.

FSR is an upscaling technology from CPU and GPU maker AMD. FSR takes an image that has been rendered at a lower resolution and uses its own algorithm to upscale it, reducing GPU loads while increasing the resolution delivered to the player. This also allows for improved framerates. Splatoon 3 will likely be targeting a steady 60 fps. This was done in Splatoon 2 by using variable resolutions, but with FSR, we may be able to expect higher resolutions from Splatoon 3.

Neither Nintendo nor AMD have publicized FSR being used in a Nintendo Switch game and confirmed examples are few. So far, Nintendo Switch Sports has also been confirmed to use it via the displayed copyright information.

Splatoon 3 is scheduled to launch for the Nintendo Switch on September 9, with the early demo running on August 27 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. PT. A tutorial will also be available in the demo starting on August 25 so players will be able to get the hang of the controls and choose their team for the Splatfest.

Splatoon 3: Splatfest World Premiere will feature a Splatfest that has players divided across 3 teams. The first 6 hours of the demo will have players facing off in the familiar Turf War mode, with the last 6 hours letting players experience the new 4v2v2 Tricolor Turf War Battles. Participating in the Splatfest requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Check the official website for more details.
