Nintendo held a Zenkoku Issei Splatoon Quiz (Nationwide Splatoon Quiz) between July 23 and 24 (JST) in Japan but Nintendo ended up apologizing for getting one of their own questions wrong.

Splatoon fans could participate in the quiz with their smartphones, with an afternoon and evening event each day for a total of 4 events. Each quiz consisted of 30 questions and scores were based on correct answers and how quickly participants answered.

Questions covered a wide range of topics from characters, weapons, and gear, to background music. One question even showed the results of a Turf War match and asked players what percentages of the map were covered. The questions were such that a casual player wouldn’t stand a chance putting up good results.

The mistaken question was one of the questions from the evening quiz on July 23 (JST). The question asked, “Which piece of gear decorates the back of the headgear shop?” It showed an image of Headspace, the headgear shop, and covered part of it with orange ink. Players were given the names of four pieces of gear and had to choose what belonged there. However, none of the choices were actually the correct answer. The quiz claimed the correct answer was the Sporty Bobble hat, but it was actually the Sennyu Bon Bon Beanie.

The incorrect Sporty Bobble Hat is by the Skalop brand and has the ability Tenacity while the correct Sennyu Bon Bon Beanie is by the Splash Mob brand and has the Ink Saver ability. But while the brands and abilities differ, they do look strikingly similar which likely led to the mix up.

But diehard Splatoon fans were quick to point out the mistake on Twitter just after the quiz ended. After this, Nintendo issued an apology and postponed releasing the worldwide rankings due to fairness concerns. While some participants expressed their disappointment, it was perhaps an unavoidable situation.

Furthermore, Nintendo launched a portal website on July 7 called Splatoon Base. The site introduces the story from Splatoon to Splatoon 3, has a weapons and gear catalog, and is filled with Splatoon’s signature wit and style. The relationship chart used to introduce characters also goes beyond what you can get by just playing the game, so it’s must-see material for newcomers to the world of Splatoon.
