SmileBoom announced a new 3D RPG development tool called RPG Developer Bakin (Bakin) on July 8 (JST). The software is scheduled to enter Early Access on Steam in 2022 and is being developed by the company behind another development tool called Petit Computer.
Bakin is a 3D RPG development tool that boasts not requiring any programming and allows users to enjoy making RPGs through its intuitive controls and sophisticated features. With its map editor, camera tools, provided graphics and audio assets, and more, SmileBoom says it has everything you need to start making games right away. And games made with Bakin can be distributed royalty free as either paid or free games.
The Map Editor provides terrain such as grasslands, cobblestone, and wooden floors, with it also being possible to adjust elevation. Bakin says that creating maps can be done as if drawing with a pen. There are also flowers, rocks, buildings, furniture and other objects that can be transformed and arranged freely. These models can be customized as well by combining objects like windows and balconies with houses.
The effects features can be used to make a variety of scenes such as changing weather, a land shrouded in fog, or perspective effects with blurring. It has advanced functions such as bloom, depth of field, ambient, fog and presets made from combining multiple effects as well.
Then there’s the Event Editor where a variety of events can be brought to life by arranging panels that represent different functions. These include things such as having a conversation, playing a sound, moving a character’s position, or creating branching selections. There are also templates for common events in RPGs like acquiring items which can be used by simply filling in the required fields.
The database provided helps users store and keep track of details regarding the characters, monsters, items, and other data in the game. By customizing these settings, Bakin aims to help players create their games and characters as they envision them.
Bakin is being made by the Japanese company SmileBoom which is located in Sapporo, Japan. The company’s Petit Computer series was made under the concept of “easy-to-use software to make game development and programming fun.” They are also behind the 3D RPG development tool Smile Game Builder. Bakin seems to continue with this concept of showing the appeal of game development with no required programming. In other words, Bakin looks to be the next generation of Smile Game Builder as they both aim to help users more easily unleash their creativity.
Bakin is slated to be in Early Access for roughly a year. When Early Access begins, it will have the fundamental features needed to make a game and a sample game made using the features available. For the full release, they’re looking to improve and add more functionality, add features to better facilitate localization, add a C# scripting reference, and add more event panels. Furthermore, the Early Access version will be cheaper than the final version when it launches.
RPG Developer Bakin can be found here on Steam.
