Japanese indie developer Rebuild Games has announced that they are developing Summer Road for Steam. The game is due out in 2023 and will support Japanese and English.
Summer Road is a hack and slash autoplay RPG that is intended for gamers who have grown tired of AAA RPGs. The game tells a story of three curious young girls who set out on a summer adventure to investigate a mysterious light that fell from the sky, far to the east.
On their journey, the girls must cross towns, railways, deep forests, and more, all the while confronting the enemies that lie in wait. However, players do not control the girls directly, as they move and battle automatically. The main focus of the game is to watch over the girls while managing their equipment and items and concentrating on character builds.
Characters can be strengthened by equipping them with various items and creating combinations that significantly alter the AI actions. For example, equipping a bat and some dash boots will enable the character to use “Dash Bat Swing.” The game also includes a system to combine items which allows you to create new equipment with special effects.
The outcome of the journey depends on random events that occur along the way as well as the routes that you choose. One playthrough lasts around ten minutes, and the ultimate goal of the game is to repeat the adventure until you arrive at the true ending.
Rebuild Games, developers of this title, have previously released a number of smartphone games, including ISSEN HERO and DONBURI GIRLS. Their most recent game, METBOY!, was also released on Nintendo Switch and Steam, in addition to iOS and Android.
Summer Road is being developed based on the concept of “an RPG that can be enjoyed more casually,” with a single playthrough only taking a short amount of time. The game’s setting was also designed to invite feelings of nostalgia. While the game can be played casually in short intervals, the aim is to provide players with the satisfaction of a full-length RPG experience through many adventures.
