Sonic Origins to release on Sonic’s birthday: June 23
Sega has announced the release date for Sonic Origins, a compilation of the early Sonic The Hedgehog titles. It’s coming out on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam/Epic Games Store) on June 23, which is Sonic’s birthday.
Sonic Origins brings Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD in digitally remastered high-resolution format with new areas, new unlockables, and all-new opening and ending animations for each title.
You can choose between Classic Mode, with the game’s original resolution and limited lives, and the new Anniversary Mode, with unlimited lives and 16:9 full-screen resolution. Anniversary Mode lets you choose between Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles as the playable character, although Knuckles is not available in Sonic CD. In addition, Boss Rush Mode, Mirror Mode, Leaderboards, and Museum (includes the original games’ documentation) will be available in the compilation.
A DLC pack called Start Dash Pack, which includes 100 Bonus Coins, Mirror Mode unlock, and Letterbox Background, will be available as a pre-order bonus for both Standard Edition and Digital Deluxe Edition. Mirror Mode is unlockable through in-game progression as well, so you don’t necessary need to own the pack to play it.
Premium Fun Pack (11 Hard Missions, 10 Letterbox Background, Sonic/Tails/Eggman Character Animation in the Main Menu, Camera Controls over the Main Menu Islands, Character Animations during Music Islands) and Classic Music Pack (Additional Music Tracks from MegaDrive/Genesis titles: Sonic Spinball, Knuckles’ Chaotix, and Sonic 3D Blast) will be available for 400 yen (around $3) each. These additional content are part of the Digital Deluxe Edition as well.
[Update 2022/04/20 23:42 JST] added extra explanation about the DLC.
