make.ctrl.Japan2 exhibit is dedicated to games that use alternative controllers


The organizers behind make.ctrl.Japan2 have announced that the exhibit will be held for two days, from April 23 to 24 (JST) at Tokyo Big Sight, alongside an analog game event called Game Market Spring 2022. Visitors will need to buy a ticket for Game Market Spring 2022 (1,500 yen) in order to get in.

make.ctrl.Japan2 is basically a Japanese version of the alt.ctrl.GDC exhibit, and showcases games that use alternative controllers. The first make.ctrl.Japan took place in Akihabara, Tokyo, in February of 2020, and now the event is back after 2 years.

Here are the games scheduled to be exhibited at the event:


Hako dake no Blues by. Wataru Nakano x MIYAZAWORKS

A stealth-action game in which you play as a naked man trying to get home undetected by hiding in a cardboard box. You use an actual cardboard box as a controller and duck inside it, just like the game’s character.

Onkou Chaahan by. Wataru Nakano x MIYAZAWORKS

It’s a “sound effect cooking game” where you must use a plastic bag to recreate the sound of making a fried rice dish.

Boss, Blind, Brandy by. Wataru Nakano x MIYAZAWORKS

It’s a PvP game where each player stands behind a window blind and holds a glass of brandy equipped with an accelerometer. The more you swirl the glass, the more you build up energy. And you can shoot the energy at the opponent by opening the blind.

Ganbare! Momotarou no Obaasan by. Hi Score Boys

Inspired by Momotarou, popular folklore in Japan, you play as a woman trying to fend off oni/demons’ attack using a washboard.

Katarite by. Katarite

A racing game where you control a car by moving your shoulders in various ways.

Mosi Mosi Panic by. Hashimoto laboratory, School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences, Meiji University

It’s a telephone action game where you use actual phones and react to various phone calls.

Kujibiki Cycle by. Nohemon

You must work part-time at a factory (in-game) and spend the hard-earned money on a lottery wheel until you hit the jackpot.

Piroipiro Chameleon 3D by. Faculty of Information Science, Aichi Institute of Technology

It’s a game where you use a blowout noise maker to capture insects, just like how a chameleon would.

Magic Shadow by. Faculty of Information Science, Aichi Institute of Technology

It’s an installation project where the animation on a screen change as you place objects in front of a light source and create shadows.

SuperCatDash by. Shumpei Akahoshi and Edward Saito

A sensory game where you use an exercise machine to move a character.

HandyFanGame by. Shumpei Akahoshi and Edward Saito

A defense game where you use a portable fan as a controller.

Ruins Climber by. MIYAZAWORKS

A PvP race game where each player tries to climb up a ruin by pulling a rope.
