Indie game developer Kazuki Shiroma has officially announced Shadow Corridor 2. The game will release on PC and is scheduled to be completed in October of this year. Console ports are also planned.

The game is a sequel to a free first-person horror game from 2017 called Shadow Corridor, which later saw a paid release on PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 with additional content. In Shadow Corridor, players search and try to escape winding corridors while being stalked by a figure wearing a Noh mask. The corridors change with each playthrough, and the gameplay requires decisive action, which was highly praised by players.

While the announcement of Shadow Corridor 2 doesn’t reveal many details about the game’s content, it will inherit the main traits of the original where players will have to evade scary enemies while searching a large, randomly generated map using a variety of items to reach the goal.

But in addition to a new story, new enemies, and new items, the game will also have a new gameplay system called Karuta (Japanese playing cards). This new system is being designed to let players enjoy finding their own unique playstyle. Rather than just be a horror experience, Kazuki Shiroma is looking to make a game that shows the fun of assessing situations while having character progression and challenge.

A campaign on the Japanese crowdfunding website CAMPFIRE has also been launched to coincide with the announcement. According to developer Kazuki Shiroma, while the first game was enjoyed by many players, the lack of funds meant the game couldn’t be fully voiced which led to things like characters talking or not talking feeling out of place. The background music and sound effects also relied on free resources, possibly causing players to recall having heard the sounds from somewhere else.

Shiroma believes this hurt the immersiveness of the first game and decided to seek funding to make sure Shadow Corridor 2 is a quality experience with a unique world.

As for how the money will be used, they say it will be for things like hiring voice actors, commissioning music, commissioning 2D artwork, and buying assets. It also sounds like the soundtrack will be handled by Shino Arata, also known as UNiMODE.

Supporters that contribute over 5,000 yen (roughly $43) will not only receive the game’s PC version, but will also get access to the beta version. The beta test is scheduled to begin in September and the full release is scheduled to launch in October.

Furthermore, the crowdfunding campaign is being run as an All-in campaign. This means that even if the funding goal isn’t reached, development will continue, and backers will receive their perks in accordance with their investment. Please check the campaign page for more details.

*Shiroma is also gathering “last words” messages for corpses to say in the game via a Twitter campaign.
