Japanese game developer AMATA has announced a new trailer for their steampunk VR action-adventure game The Tale of Onogoro. The game will be compatible with Quest VR headsets and distributed via the Meta Quest Store when it launches worldwide in spring 2022 for $29.99.

The Tale of Onogoro is an action-adventure game that combines traditional Japanese culture and steampunk elements. Players will travel around a mysterious world with a shrine maiden named Haru while solving puzzles and battling giant beast-like beings called Kami along the way. The game is being made by the development team behind the VR escape room game Last Labyrinth, with producer and director Hiromichi Takahashi spearheading the project.

You’ll play as a gamer who was about to put on a VR headset to play a VR game. Instead, the protagonist travels to a parallel dimension reminiscent of the Taisho era -which lasted from 1912 to 1926- in Japan, where steam-powered technologies have prospered and fused with the ancient power of Ki. But the people of this world are threatened by the Kami’s rampage.

One day, five Kami appeared on an island called Onogoro, and the shrine maiden Haru was dispatched to quell the raging beasts. However, her body parts were stolen and sealed in a keystone by Arakida Masatake, the mastermind behind the Kami’s mayhem.

Trapped inside a shrine, Haru summoned help using what little power she had left, and that’s when the protagonist was accidentally called upon. The protagonist decides to go on an adventure with Haru to solve the mysteries of Onogoro Island, quell the Kami, and stop Arakida’s scheme.

The player can wield a pair of celestial weapons called Yin and Yang Guns (陰陽銃) to help out the priestess in various ways. The trailer above showcases how the guns can be used to interact with the world, solve puzzles, and fight against the raging Kami. Since one of Haru’s legs is chained to a keystone, she cannot move by herself. The player must use the guns to lift and carry Haru and the keystone around. The player and Haru’s lives are shared, meaning if one is hurt, both take damage. So make sure not to leave her in danger.
