In the Japanese version of today’s Nintendo Direct 2022.2.10 broadcast, Marvelous Inc. presented a juvenile RPG called LOOP8. The game is planned to release in 2022 on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation4, and Xbox One. A release outside of Japan has yet to be announced.
LOOP8 is a juvenile RPG that takes place over a summer. In the game, humanity is threatened by an ancient calamity called “Kegai.” The protagonist Nini is a boy that grew up on a space station. But after losing his home and family to the Kegai, Nini turns to relatives on his mother’s side for help and arrives in a quiet rural town called Ashihara. From there, Nini is greeted by a relative who introduces herself as Konoha.
Players will go through daily life in the town and find people possessed by the Kegai. It sounds like in these parts players will build relationships with those around them, train to fight Kegai, and be free to do as they please during their limited free time. Once you find someone possessed by Kegai, you enter the interval between your world and theirs and will be able to confront the Kegai directly. The relationships you’ve built and the training you’ve done will influence the results of your battles with the Kegai.
The game also has a loop function. If you want to redo something like building a relationship or facing off with Kegai, you can return back a set interval of time while retaining certain aspects of your progress.
On top of that, LOOP8 has something called the Kareru System which they describe as an emotional AI, and it controls all progress in the game with character emotions and the story constantly changing. Player’s choices also influence the world, and they say to expect a different experience each time you play.
LOOP8’s game design and scenario are being led by Yuuri Shibamura, known for their work on Gunparade March. Character design is being led by En Morikura, known for designing the VTuber character Kizuna AI, and Shingo Adachi, known for designing and directing the Sword Art Online anime. Concept art is being done by the illustrator Kitsuneiro, and Noriyuki Iwadare, known for their involvement in the Ace Attorney series is handling the game’s music. Bringing it all together is the producer Youichi Miyaji, known for their work on the Grandia series and others.
