Animal Crossing: New Horizons gets an update to fix nude villager glitch

Nintendo has released Ver. 2.0.4 of Animal Crossing: New Horizons which fixes some bugs in the main game and in the paid Happy Home Paradise DLC. But what seems to be drawing the most attention from the patch notes is that the nude villager glitch has been fixed.

As the name implies, the nude villager glitch causes villagers to appear without their clothes on. In Animal Crossing, most villagers walk around wearing clothes, and players can’t see what’s underneath. But in early December, reports started popping up about an issue where villagers were appearing without wearing any clothes.

The bug was introduced in the Happy Home Paradise DLC and was triggered by villagers wearing clothing with Custom Designs. While verifying the bug in the previous version (Ver. 2.0.3), we recreated it by doing the following:

  • Talk to Niko at the resort island docks and visit a completed vacation home.
  • Within the vacation home, call a villager with an amiibo card as a customer that you haven’t made a home for yet.
  • Have the villager change into a Custom Design.
  • Save and close the game.
  • Restart the game.
  • Go to the office where Lottie is and use the card reader to call the previous villager again with an amiibo card.
  • Designate an open resort spot and offer to build a vacation home there.
  • For some reason, villagers that come to see their vacation home being built will be naked.

We’ve confirmed that the nude villager glitch caused by the above steps has been fixed in this latest version and that villagers are completely clothed when visiting their vacation homes.

There are also some players that are saddened by the fix. While the nude villager glitch was technically a bug within the game, there weren’t any reports of it actually causing any real harm, and some players seemed to enjoy recreating it in their game. Villagers are normally covered by clothing, so they may have just wanted to take a glance at what’s hidden underneath.

With that being said, the ability to have villagers change clothes is still available. At the photo studio on Harv’s Island or at the resort area, villagers on the island and animals called with amiibo cards can still be changed into the outfits you want them to wear.

For example, you can switch Wilbur’s sunglasses to a pair with transparent lenses and see his charming eyes. You can also change the yellow hat Kicks wears and see the bushy hair he keeps hidden underneath. By changing villager’s outfits, maybe you can find details about the characters you haven’t noticed before.
