Toby Fox revealed as a composer for upcoming PC/Switch remaster of OFF

Publisher Fangamer and developer Mortis Ghost have revealed that some of the tracks in the upcoming OFF remaster will be composed by Deltarune and Undertale creator Toby Fox. The remaster of the influential RPG will be coming to Nintendo Switch and PC in 2025.

Originally released for free back in 2008, OFF was created by Belgian developer Mortis Ghost and composer Alias Conrad Coldwood. At first, the game was only available in French, but its popularity led to it being translated into various other languages including English in 2011. In the game, you play Batter, a baseball batsman who upon receiving guidance from a talking cat called The Judge, sets off on a mission to purify the world and rid it of specters. The game’s fast-paced RPG combat, tricky puzzles and bizarre story and atmosphere have made it a cult classic.

The upcoming remaster, which currently has over 50k wishlists on Steam, will introduce an all-new battle system, as well as new areas and hidden bosses, all from the original creator Mortis Ghost. It will also feature a number of new battle music themes composed by Toby Fox. Discussing OFF in an interview on the official website, Fox mentions that OFF influenced Undertale – especially the game’s iconic skeleton duo. Specifically, Papyrus’s appearance was initially inspired by OFF boss Dedan, and Sans’s character was slightly inspired by OFF characters Zacharie and The Judge.

Fox explains that composing new tracks for OFF gave him a “complicated feeling.” Given how the original soundtrack has become a vital part of players’ memories of the game, Fox notes that “Trying to replace those songs feels like breaking into somebody’s house and pasting your face into their family photo album.” However, he seems honored by the opportunity, and also called upon long-time collaborator Camellia (AKA Masaya Oya, known for his work on Beatmania and Dance Dance Revolution tracks) to help out with the arrangement.

Fox notes that he made the new tracks for free and views his contribution as fanmusic, made out of love and respect for Alias Conrad Coldwood’s original score.

OFF is scheduled to be released later this year for PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch. A physical collector’s edition can be preordered for the Switch, with lots of bonus goodies. The game will be playable in English and French.
