The Fox’s Way Home releases on Switch, giving Nintendo fans a chance at spotting sexy shrine maiden imposters

BeXide Inc.’s The Fox’s Way Home, which was released for Windows and macOS via Steam last October 9, 2024, has now been ported over to the Nintendo Switch. Switch owners looking to experience the unique puzzle game can purchase it starting January 9, 2025.

In a slightly similar vein to Kotake Create’s The Exit 8, The Fox’s Way Home is a spot-the-difference game but with dancing anime fox girls instead of looping subway corridors. As the protagonist, you are trapped in a strange world with the Fox Shrine Maiden (voiced by Maaya Uchida, who is best known for her role as the Japanese voice of Rikka Takanashi in Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions). To return home, the Fox Shrine Maiden explains that you must take part in a ritual that involves watching her various dances and deducing whether it is truly her who is performing them.

Apparitions called “Mononoke” will try to mimic the Fox Shrine Maiden, requiring you to view the dances from various angles. One Mononoke will mistakenly disguise themselves with tanuki ears instead of the Fox Shrine Maiden’s usual pointy fox ears, easily giving away their identity. Another Mononoke sports black hair as opposed to the Fox Shrine Maiden’s usual gold locks.

As the dancer moves, you have to quickly determine if she is the real Fox Shrine Maiden or not. Exposing a Mononoke will banish them and light one of eight lanterns in the area. All eight lanterns must be lit to complete the ritual that transports you home, and incorrectly guessing even once will cause the ritual to fail. Banished Mononoke will also be recorded in an encyclopedia, which includes the number of times you’ve encountered them as well as your correct guesses. The game currently has a Very Positive rating on Steam.

To commemorate The Fox’s Way Home’s Switch release, the game’s soundtrack will be available on various streaming and download sites starting January 16, 2025. The five songs used in the game are similar to those used in Kagura – a form of Japanese dance theater meant to entertain the gods. Coincidentally, Capcom’s Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, which released last year, also heavily features Japanese shrine traditions and Kagura.

The Fox’s Way Home is currently available on Windows and macOS via Steam. A Nintendo Switch version will be available on January 9, 2025.
