Protect a birthday cake from a crowded Japanese station in this hyperactive sidescroller

Japanese developer Racjin, known for making a number of Bomberman titles, is releasing their casual side-scrolling action game The Cake in Early Access on July 19. The game is available on Steam and can be played in English, Japanese or Simplified Chinese.

Set in Japan, you play a devoted dad trying to carry home a yummy looking birthday cake for his daughter. Sounds easy, right? Unfortunately, the train station is packed with people, many who don’t seem to be looking where they are going. You must avoid fast-walking businessmen exiting the train, as well as young people staring at their phones and busy grandmas out grocery shopping. You win the game if you manage to get the strawberry topped birthday cake home safely without splatting sponge and cream down someone’s front.

Oh, and that’s not all. The Cake will also have boss battles. The rather bizarre one shown in the trailer has you trying to get your precious cargo safely past a sumo wrestler (it also inexplicably features a cameo from Tarzan). The Cake’s quirky, over-the-top Japanese setting is reminiscent of cult PS1 game Incredible Crisis, which saw players try to help members of a Japanese family get home in time.

At the time of writing, The Cake has 4 regular stages and 4 high difficulty stages. Based on Early Access feedback, the developer plans to improve the game, and add more levels and enemy characters.

The Cake will be available in Early Access on PC (Steam) starting July 19.
