The Japanese Nintendo Support X account is a nifty stop for useful tips (and tricks) on using the company’s products and services. One of its more recent tips, which caught many by surprise, shows how you can slow down the Nintendo Switch 2’s battery degradation.
On the Nintendo Switch 2, you can slow down battery degradation by setting ‘Stop charging at approximately 80–90%’ to ‘ON’.
*Please note that the system may charge the battery to 100% even when this feature is set to ‘ON’ in order to calibrate the battery level display.
By opening your Nintendo Switch 2’s System Settings menu (the gear icon on your main toolbar) and selecting ‘System,’ you’ll find an option that lets your console automatically stop charging once it reaches roughly 80-90% charge. Turning this option on is intended to decrease the rate at which your battery degrades, potentially increasing its lifespan.
While battery degradation naturally occurs as you use electronic devices, factors like structural damage and heat (the latter of which can be caused by overcharging) can cause it to deteriorate faster. The Nintendo Switch 2’s built-in option, resembling recent smart phones, looks to help alleviate heat buildup from overcharging by halting the charging process once it has reached an acceptable percentage. Though you will still eventually have to change your console’s battery, turning this option on will hopefully make it last longer and prevent any battery swelling.
