To commemorate three years since the release of the Resident Evil 4 remake, Capcom’s Resident Evil Portal account posted two new statistics about the game, which, oddly enough, have to do with the Merchant’s earnings. Based on players’ total transactions, the Merchant has bought far more of Leon Kennedy’s and Ada Wong’s wares than he has sold, racking up a debt that could rival a country.
While it’s hard to determine the current exchange rate of Pesetas to USD (Resident Evil 4’s currency is based on an old Spanish tender that was replaced by the Euro in 2002), 3,337,279,919,290 PTS is still a very large number. Considering one of the most expensive items in the game, the Rocket Launcher, costs 160,000 PTS on Hardcore and Professional mode, that would amount to at least 20,857,999 of the explosive weapons.

You can’t exactly fault the Merchant for his losses. Resident Evil 4 has several items just lying around its world for you to pick up and sell, with the most expensive items being pieces of jewelry that can be slotted with gems to increase their value. On top of that, you can and are advised to sell unwanted weapons and items to make room in your attaché case and inventory, which is more limited compared to other Resident Evil titles.
Given the rural area’s current situation and how easy it is to find valuables, it’s a wonder how the Merchant still manages to remain in business. His losses don’t seem to bother him, however, as he always manages to greet his customers with a laugh and a “What’re ya buyin’?”, knowing full well he’s getting the short end of the deal.
