Danganronpa fans get cruel piece of Mondo Owada merch for 15th anniversary

Interestingly, it is the only item in the 15th anniversary product lineup that has a limit of one purchase per person.

In celebration of Danganronpa’s 15th anniversary, Spike Chunsoft is releasing a bunch of merchandise centered on Hope’s Peak Academy’s best and deadliest. Amidst the usual items like Danganronpa-branded pens, tote bags, and pins, one of the more unique pieces of merch is the Mondo Butter Pouch, which is meant to hold your everyday trinkets while subtly reminding you of a liquified teenager. Unsurprisingly, the item has gone viral among Japanese fans, with dozens of horrified and amused replies asking the publisher “Have you no heart?”

Known as the Ultimate Biker Gang Leader, Mondo Owada made his first appearance in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. After admitting to killing Chihiro Fujisaki and being voted guilty by his fellow students, Mondo was sentenced to death by Monokuma by way of a modified motorcycle stunt called the Cage of Death.

After churning in the Cage of Death, Mondo exits not as a person, but as a package of 80 kilograms of Mondo Butter (with two times the fat, no less). The logo on the new butter pouch is a replica of the one found on the in-game butter cover of the Japanese version of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc.

Though it might be disturbing to think of a liquefied high schooler while spreading butter on your toast, the reference is subtle and can only be understood by Danganronpa fans, making it an ideal piece of game merch. Interestingly, it is the only item in the 15th anniversary product lineup that has a limit of one purchase per person.

Costing 3,080 JPY (roughly $20 USD), the Mondo Butter Pouch can only be bought at the Danganronpa 15th Anniversary Exhibition located in the Matsuzakaya Ueno Store 6F Event Hall, Tokyo, from March 1 to 16.
