“Overwhelmingly Positive” indie visual novel Magical Girl Witch Trials surpasses 500,000 units sold and 25,000 reviews less than a year after launch

Magical Girl Witch Trials developer Acacia recently announced that the game had surpassed 500,000 units sold on Steam worldwide.

Acacia, the creative brand under Japanese game studio Re;AER, announced on February 27 that the Steam version of their mystery visual novel Magical Girl Witch Trials has surpassed 500,000 units sold since its launch in July last year. Subsequently, on March 1st it was announced that the game has received over 25,000 user reviews worldwide, 96% of which were positive, earning it an “Overwhelmingly Positive” score on the platform.

Magical Girl Witch Trials follows the story of Ema, a teenage girl who wakes up trapped in a prison mansion alongside 12 other magic-wielding girls who have “the potential to become witches.” As their magic gradually grows stronger and their minds get filled with murderous thoughts, the girls are forced to participate in a series of cruel witch trials in order to fish out the “true witches” of the group. While the visual novel only presents itself as a “dark magical girl” story akin to Puella Magi ☆ Madoka Magica and Magical Girl Raising Project, the gameplay heavily draws from the Danganronpa and Ace Attorney series.

Thanks to its colorful cast of characters and a fresh take on the killing game genre, Magical Girl Witch Trials managed to win the hearts of both Japanese and Chinese gamers, and back in October, only around three months after the game’s launch, it was reported that the game sold over 200,000 copies on Steam. And it seems like its popularity isn’t going to be fading away anytime soon, as the game sold an additional 300,000 copies from November 2025 to February 2026.

At the time of writing, Magical Girl Witch Trials is only available in Japanese and Simplified Chinese, with full Japanese audio. According to a past interview, amidst the game’s overwhelming success, the developers are also testing out the waters for a North American expansion, so we expect that an English version of the game will be available somewhere down the line.

On a related note, Acacia and G-MODE are currently developing The Streamer’s Alt Account Labyrinth, a visual novel/adventure RPG revolving around the dark side of the Internet culture, which will be getting an official English version according to the game’s Steam Store page.

Magical Girl Witch Trials is out now for PC (Steam), with a Nintendo Switch version coming in 2026.
