Bizarre bug in Arknights: Endfield turns all characters blue-skinned for some reason, players mistake it for alien design

A Japanese Arknights: Endfield player recently discovered a bug that turns all characters blue-skinned, mistaking it for alien design.

It’s been around a week since Chinese developer Hypergryph released the long-anticipated free-to-play action RPG Arknights: Endfield, and as is common with any live service game at launch, some players have already started running into issues preventing them from comfortably expanding their industrial empire.

While more serious bugs have also been appearing, like the game charging players via PayPal for microtransactions they didn’t actually make, a rather amusing one is taking the spotlight over on the Japanese side of X. Apparently, players are encountering a bug that makes the game launch with all of the characters appearing blue-skinned.

After innocently spending a few hours in the game exploring Talos-II and setting up their automated factories, X user Hatomugi (@hatomugi_x) finally started noticing that, maybe the characters were never supposed to have blue skin in the first place. Though, since the story of Endfield has a very strong “space opera” feel, it honestly wouldn’t be strange to see the blue-skinned Endministrator and Perlica in the tutorial portion of the game and think “maybe they’re doing something like Interstella 5555.”

Post translation:

Ever since I started playing this game, all characters had blue skin for some reason, and I was like “Ohh~ this is like those demons from Shinra Bansho Chocolate.” But when you think about, none of the promotional visuals for the game had blue skinned characters, so there’s definitely something strange as heck going on here. (Though to be honest, I’m kind of into it.)

Diving into the game, Hatomugi didn’t think anything was odd, and it was only when they reached that scene in which Perlica hands the Endministrator an apple (a very blue one), that they started thinking that something suspicious was going on. Though, they ended up shrugging it off at first, because if all characters are blue, there is no reason why apples can’t be blue in the Endfield universe as well. Apparently, the “blue bug” didn’t just affect the characters’ skin colors.

Judging by the discrepancies between the whole color schemes of original and blue-skinned characters (both 2D illustrations and 3D models), including outfits, weapons and accessories, one could assume that an overall “hue shift” ended up happening somewhere along the line. Furthermore, taking a closer look at the screenshots provided, the usually yellow UI elements in the operator menu had also turned blue. Another gameplay screenshot by Hatomugi showcases the same thing happening to the friend menu, with the Endministrator icon turning into a blue hue.

It seems like this isn’t the first time this kind of bug occurred in Endfield since its release seven days ago. Prompted by the now viral post, another Japanese X user reported the same “blue skin” bug, theorizing that it may have something to do with the Intel graphics driver update they did before installing the game. Apparently, the bug was fixed once they reverted the driver to a previous version.

Several days ago, Reddit user real3512 also encountered the same issue under rather similar circumstances to Hatomugi. While attempts at reinstalling the game and checking file integrity didn’t change much, it seems like they managed to fix the bug by switching the rendering engine to DirectX 11 (this can be performed just by checking the “Launch with DirectX 11” box under the Play button in the Launcher).
