Monster Rancher-inspired indie passion project Mamon King tops Steam charts in Japan

To the elation of Japanese YouTuber Yoshinama, his debut indie game Mamon King is seeing impressive sales on Steam and Switch.

Mamon King, a new indie monster-raising simulator created by LiTMUS and popular Japanese gaming YouTuber Yoshinama, has been making waves on Steam. After releasing on December 11, the title recorded over 2,000 concurrent players and became the top-selling game on the Japan Steam store, temporarily outperforming popular mainstays like Apex Legends, The End of History, Overwatch 2, and Arc Raiders.

Mamon King has ranked number one in sales in Japan! It’s only the initial surge, but as a gamer, I simply must treasure this screenshot as a family heirloom to show off to my kids! Thank you to everyone who bought it!  – Yoshinama

Inspired by Koei Tecmo’s Monster Rancher franchise, Mamon King allows players to train, fight, and connect with up to 38 unique creatures called “Mamon.” By expanding on the established systems with card battles and randomized elements, the title manages to carve out a unique identity.

The title is Yoshinama’s passion project. Though a beginner in game development, his go-to attitude and willingness to create his dream game despite there being no guarantee of success caught the attention of LiTMUS game director Yu Totsuka.

After juggling game development and investing 25 million JPY (roughly $160,000 USD) of his own money into the project for roughly two years, Yoshinama has every right to be overjoyed at the game’s “Very Positive” reception on Steam. It has also come to his attention that Mamon King has become the third most-downloaded Nintendo Switch game on the Japan My Nintendo Store, behind Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road.

Mamon King is available on Windows (Steam) and Nintendo Switch.
