A rare, one-of-a-kind Yoshitaka Amano art piece featuring Cloud Strife and Aerith Gainsborough from Final Fantasy VII, as well as Tidus and Yuna from Final Fantasy X has sold for 1,225,522 JPY (roughly $7861.38 USD) on Yahoo! Japan Auctions. Since the Cloud and Aerith sketches closely resemble their remake counterparts, some surmise that the piece was created quite recently, though this hasn’t been officially confirmed.

Initially running for 10,000 JPY ($64 USD), the art piece quickly racked up bids over its 7-day bidding run. With regards to its legitimacy, the piece is signed by Amano and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Given the rarity of Amano’s Final Fantasy crossover pieces and how they wouldn’t fit into the context of most games (save for a few exceptions like the Dissidia Final Fantasy series), some fans on X believe this is a personal artwork that the artist put up for sale. However, given that the title of the work roughly translates to “Custom Order,” it is more likely that this was a commission made for a fan that was eventually sold or donated to Miraika Art Co. Now that the question of Cloud and Aerith’s relationship has been put to rest by Final Fantasy VII Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi, this piece more closely reflects the romantic relationships that the blond, pretty boy protagonists have across the two titles.
