Tales of Xillia Remastered, the latest game to release as part of Bandai Namco Entertainment’s “Tale of Remastered Project,” will go live on October 31, bringing the JRPG franchise’s 13th entry to modern platforms. Ahead of launch, general producer Yusuke Tomizawa talked to Famitsu about the remaster project’s progress and reception so far.
With the development of Tales of Graces f Remastered and Tales of Xillia Remastered done, Tomizawa confirms that there are more than two remastered titles currently in the works. Among them, one project is nearing the end of development, with official announcements not too far off.
As for reception so far, the developers feel fortunate that they’ve been able to release the remastered titles across multiple regions and platforms, and Tomizawa confirms that over 70% of Tales players now come from outside of Japan. This is not a result of the Japanese fanbase is shrinking, but rather a natural outcome of global population ratios and hardware distribution, he explains.
Interestingly, Tomizawa comments that with the ratio of overseas players growing, it has struck him that “when we deliver Japanese RPGs to the world, there is no difference in the love people feel for the characters regardless of country or region.” His team has found that overseas players’ reactions to the games generally don’t differ much from Japanese players, “in a good way.” As such, their stance is “not to think in terms of what will appeal overseas, but to focus on delivering games that are purely entertaining and interesting in a way that’s true to the Tales series.”

Addressing the growing demand for new Tales games, Tomizawa says that his team is “constantly thinking about and moving towards a new project,” but that it will likely take some time before they can commit to an announcement.
