Umamusume: Pretty Derby revises story and voice lines that referenced Republic of Ireland’s non-existent royal family

Umamusume: Pretty Derby's latest Japanese version update addresses an unusual discrepancy in Fine Motor's backstory.

Cygames updated certain scenarios and voice lines in Umamusume: Pretty Derby’s Japanese version on October 10. Specifically, the changes affect scenes related to the character Fine Motion. Previously, her backstory suggested that she was part of “Ireland’s royal family,” despite Ireland being a republic. Likely to avoid any confusion arising from this discrepancy (especially as Umamusume recently got a global release), the developers have made some small revisions.

The update, which went live around 11:30 AM Japan time, modified several in-game elements and even Fine Motion’s official character profile on the game’s website. However, all changes are limited to wording and do not affect gameplay or event outcomes.

In the game, Fine Motion is a racehorse who came to Tracen Academy from Ireland. Her original backstory suggested she had royal ties and lived a sheltered life as a result, making her time at the academy a chance to create new memories. Her story depicts a girl experiencing freedom for the first time, training, racing, and inhaling ramen.

With the update, her backstory has been reworded, although it’s quite subtle. Instead of implying she’s an Irish royal, she’s now described as a descendant of royalty who “ended up” in Ireland, and the daughter of a high-ranking government official. As such, Fine Motion is still referred to as a royal and guarded by bodyguards. The revision comes nearly four years after her debut in the game in December 2021.

Umamusume: Pretty Derby is available for PC (Steam), iOS and Android.
