Fresh from Resident Evil Requiem’s showcase at Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2025, the developers of Capcom’s latest survival horror title found that Japanese attendees were more likely to play their showfloor demo in third person. On the other hand, people who played the same demo at Gamescom 2025 in Cologne, Germany, tended to favor playing in first person.

Talking to Denfaminicogamer, game director Koshi Nakanishi speculates that the difference in players’ POV preferences might have to do with their gaming history. Whereas many Western players grew up with first-person PC shooters like Doom, for Japanese players it was third-person console RPGs such as Dragon Quest on the Famicom that were formative. “I think those kinds of differences are significant,” he comments.
Of course, not every Western player loves FPS games, and not every Japanese player likes RPGs. Nakanishi sees that the landscape of gaming is changing, as many young Japanese gamers are getting accustomed to playing first-person POV titles like Minecraft and Apex Legends. He is interested in seeing how preferences change as players get older, and would like to see a proper analysis on the subject.

Aside from the swappable perspectives, which impact how scary the experience is, the Resident Evil Requiem’s developers are doing everything they can to make the game as accessible as possible. Reports say that the TGS 2025 demo runs smoothly on the Nintendo Switch 2, and the return to Raccoon City will be appreciated by newcomers and veterans of the series.
Resident Evil Requiem is set to launch on February 27 for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X❘S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
