Developer accidentally names game “Crap Dungeon” on Japanese Steam store in apparent localization mishap

To the amusement on many, Italian indie developer Fix-a-Bug named their game the equivalent of "Crap/Shitty Dungeon" in Japanese.

Italian developer Fix-a-Bug recently announced a release date for their roguelike dungeon-crawler titled The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles, set to launch on Steam on October 24. Ahead of launch, the title has garnered much attention among Japanese gamers due to a baffling mishap – the name “Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles” somehow ended up being localized as “Crap Dungeon” for Japanese Steam users.

The unflattering misnomer “Kuso Dungeon” (jp: クソダンジョン, lit: shitty/crappy dungeon) suddenly appeared on the store page on August 8, and the issue quickly started circulating among amused users on X and Fix-a-Bug’s official Discord server.

The cause of this may be related to ongoing updates to The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles’ Japanese localization. The game’s demo first got a Japanese language version after it was chosen for the “Selected Indie 80” category at last year’s Tokyo Game Show. However, the localization was heavily machine-translated and felt awkward for players, so Fix-a-Bug announced that they would be making revisions ahead of the game’s full release. The change to “Crap Dungeon” may have happened in the process of such updates.

The game’s programmer Giorgio Macratore responded to user reports on X, commenting, “Hello! Programmer here. It wasn’t intended, but it seems the game became ‘Crap Dungeon’ in Japanese (poop emoji). I’m fixing it now… but honestly, I’m still laughing. Please give our game a try, I’m hoping it’s not actually crap.” The developers also addressed the issue in the official Discord server, and the title has since been corrected.

The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles launches for PC (Steam) on October 24.
