Former Devil May Cry dev’s anime superhero action game Mightreya launches open playtest

Anime-styled superhero action game Mightreya, developed by ex-Devil May Cry dev, launches open playtest and official Discord server.

After being in the works for almost 3 years, MIGHTREYA – an upcoming anime-styled hero action game created by former Devil May Cry developer Wazen – launched an open playtest starting June 27. The full game, in which you get to fight monsters and run amok as a butt-kicking superhero content creator, is set to release in 2025. To access the playtest and see what the game has to offer so far, you’ll need to register for it on the game’s Steam page. Additionally, an official MIGHTREYA Discord server was created for fans and playtesters to share their feedback.

MIGHTREYA’s playtest showcases an early version of the game, akin to a work-in-progress build – meaning that many parts of the game are still being polished or could be subject to further adjustments, or even a complete rework. However, the developer encourages you to go ahead and explore the game, run wild, break stuff, and most importantly, share your thoughts and any glitches you might encounter.

In a past interview with Automaton West, Wazen told us that, while they’re not working completely solo (as they commission other independent artists when needed), their mostly independent dev work was made possible due to the internet and social media. Mightreya’s concept was also partly shaped based on the feedback of the English-speaking audience. Analyzing trends and participating in English-speaking spheres on social media, Wazen concluded that the English-speaking audience seems to be more interested in “deeper” action games. That is one of the reasons why this title focuses on aerial combat as opposed to the conventional hand-to-hand combat on the ground, having much simpler controls that help you get straight into the action. As a logical next step, Wazen decided to start a MIGHTREYA Official Discord, where fans can directly send their feedback and suggestions of the playtest and interact with the developer in real time.

Mightreya will have as many as 38 stages to be explored and 24 different enemy types to beat. As Wazen notes in the forementioned interview, the game’s focus on aerial combat and vibrant anime-esque graphics are a step-up from their previous action-game, Assault Spy. Furthermore, the game’s action mechanics also take inspiration from titles like Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner and the Devil May Cry series.

MIGHTREYA is set to release in 2025 for the PC (Steam). The open playtest is currently live.
