As you continue your journey to defeat The Paintress in Clair Obscur: Expedition: 33, you’ll eventually wind up in the Flying Waters and come upon your first Paint Cage. While the in-game tutorial tells you to shoot three Paint Cage locks, it can be confusing as to what you have to do to unlock these treasure troves.

Paint Cage locks look like small Paint Cages and are scattered around the main Paint Cage’s general location. They usually require platforming or a keen eye to find them, so be on the lookout for their telltale glow. The lock’s magic will return to its associated Paint Cage when shot, making it easy to uncover the location of a Paint Cage you haven’t spotted yet.

Once all three locks have been destroyed, the Paint Cage will unlock, and you will be free to claim your reward. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s strange world can turn even a simple word like “lock” into a code you must decipher. The next time you’re looking for a Paint Cage lock, be sure to keep an eye out for a small Paint Cage and not some magical floating padlock.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is available for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X|S.
