Yoko Taro jokingly calls The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy a “Danganronpa spin-off” – then clarifies it’s not

Yoko Taro makes a playfully ironic comment to celebrate the release of The Hundred Line — and brings up a very good point about it.

In anticipation of the release of The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy on April 24, creators with personal ties to developer Too Kyo Games have been sharing their impressions of the game and writing comments of support.

Kicking off the 10-day countdown with a heartful message by Masahiro Sakurai, a new comment is being published each day on Hundred Line’s official X account to hype up the game until its release. So far, many prominent figures in the industry have chimed in to show their appreciation for the sweat and tears that were put into developing the game – including people like Keiichiro Toyama, creator of Silent Hill, and Rise of the Ronin’s director Fumihiko Yasuda.

Yesterday, NieR: Automata creator Yoko Taro shared his rather chaotic impression of the upcoming game’s demo, making a tongue-in-cheek jab at how much it’s being compared to Kazutaka Kodaka’s past work – the Danganronpa series.

Congratulations on completing the development of “Danganronpa Side-Story: Last Defense Academy!”
Oh man, when I first heard that you would be “turning Danganronpa into a simulation RPG,” I wasn’t quite sure about how that would work, but I feel so relieved now that I’ve played the demo.
How do I even put it – it was so “Danganronpa,” from head to toe.
A closed-off academy shrouded in darkness; a super unique cast of students gathered under circumstances that defy all logic; a cute but also disturbing mascot character………It’s everything you’d expect of it.

But wait; by adding completely new game elements to it, the final result reaches a Super High School Level – it exceeds all expectations.
The fans definitely won’t be indifferent about this one…….

Uh? What?? This WASN’T Danganronpa? It’s a completely different game by a completely different company? Then……what even was the game I played……No no, I’m pretty sure I remember playing it
Remember…playing it….

While Kodaka responded to Yoko Taro’s message with equally tongue-in-cheek anger, behind all of their banter lies, presumably, nothing but love towards the work of Too Kyo Games and its members. Yoko Taro’s over-the-top message, through its playful irony, brings up a very good point. Although Hundred Line being compared to Danganronpa may be inevitable, it is a completely new project created by the same crew that was responsible for making the Danganronpa series such a unique experience; Except that now they’ve become independent, establishing their own company in order to do crazy things an established corporation wouldn’t allow. Kodaka himself has emphasized that his goal for Hundred Line was to create a game that would ultimately surpass Danganronpa in terms of gameplay depth and achieve his “ideal.”

With its 100 different endings, The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy releases on April 24 for the PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch.
