Marvel Rivals: Why the Venom twerk emote is a bigger deal than people realize

Venom’s new Symbiote Boogie emote in Marvel Rivals has Eddie Brock twerking his dumptruck - which is actually an important addition to the game.

Released as the final surprise reward of the Galacta’s Cosmic Adventure limited-time event in Marvel Rivals, Venom’s Symbiote Boogie emote has Eddie Brock twerking to one of Luna Snow’s signature tracks. The emote is taking the game by storm, but this funky dance emote does more for Marvel Rivals than players realize.

Marvel Rivals doesn’t have teabagging or offensive taunt emotes

Despite being a third-person hero shooter, Marvel Rivals does not allow players to crouch. In addition to preventing players from adjusting their characters’ heights to avoid damage, the lack of a crouch input means there is no way to teabag eliminated foes. Whether or not the lack of teabagging was an intentional design choice is something only NetEase Games knows for now, but the decision fits with the developers’ goals of fostering a wholesome community.

The same can be said for the game’s emotes, all of which are wholesome from the get-go. While some will find situations to use emotes in unintended and naughty ways (such as using Spider-Man’s default crouching emote to sniff Venom’s butt), the amount of time needed to execute an emote coupled with the action’s relative tameness doesn’t have the same impact as teabagging.

Marvel Rival's Venom Symbiote Boogie emote

The Venom twerk emote is fun for all

Symbiote Boogie is unique in that it makes fun of the eliminated players as well as the one performing it. Venom’s large behind has been a topic of discussion in the Marvel Rivals community for so long that it was a surprise when the developers released an emote that lets Eddie Brock shake what his mama gave him. Combine this long-running gag with the character’s typically menacing aura and players can’t help but laugh whenever an enemy or ally busts out the Symbiote Boogie.

The timing of Symbiote Boogie’s release was perfect

Considering the nature of April Fool’s Day, NetEase Games couldn’t have found a better time to release the Symbiote Boogie emote. It falls in line with the date’s custom of making jokes and gives players something to enjoy while they wait for the next big content drop.

That said, a lot of Symbiote Boogie’s novelty comes from the fact that there is no other emote like it. Releasing similar emotes would reduce Symbiote Boogie’s impact and would cause Marvel Rivals to become goofier. Not everyone wants the game to become something like Fortnite but for now, players can take solace in the fact that Venom is the only superhero who can twerk out.

Marvel Rivals is available for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S.
