Metacritic recently released their annual game publisher rankings for 2024. Three Japanese publishers made it into the top 5, with Sega taking the number one spot, closely followed by Capcom in second place, and Sony in fourth.
Publishers are ranked using a point system, which is calculated based on the review scores of all games released by the company earned on Metacritic. “Good” games are defined as those with a Metacritic score of 75 and up, whereas “great” games are those with a score of 90 and above, the latter of which earn the publisher bonus points in the ranking.
Sega hit the top spot with a score of 325.5 points. New IP Metaphor: ReFantazio received especially strong critical acclaim with a score of 94. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Shin Megami Tensei V also ranked highly, with the Xbox Series X versions gaining a score of 92.

Hot on Sega’s heels was Capcom, with 323.1 points. Although none of Capcom’s releases in 2024 scored over 90, they all received a positive Metacritic rating. With a Metacritic score of 88 on PC, Dragon’s Dogma 2 was Capcom’s highest rated title of the year.

Sony claimed fourth place with 314 points. It was the publisher with the highest number of games to score over 90, namely the award-sweeping Astro Bot, Destiny 2: The Final Shape, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and a PC port of God of War: Ragnarok. However, some weaker titles, like Concord, which was shut down soon after launch, prevented Sony from climbing higher up the chart.
