On February 28, indie developer STP Works made a humorous post on X saying that they haven’t sold a single game on Steam since Capcom’s highly anticipated Monster Hunter Wilds came out.
STP Works is a two-person indie developer that makes low-cost multiplayer games. Their releases include the Old Coin Pusher Friends series of co-op games with a Japanese theme.
From the X post, it seems they were selling games right up until 8 hours before Monster Hunter Wild’s release, when sales suddenly flatlined. It is unclear whether this was directly caused by Monster Hunter Wilds or is merely a coincidence. Although their post is quite humorous, it wouldn’t be a complete surprise if other games saw fewer sales and lower levels of user activity for the next week or so because tens of thousands of people were busy hunting in Capcom’s latest game.
Incidentally, at the time of writing, the Steam version of Monster Hunter Wilds been out for just 2 hours and already has an estimated concurrent player count of almost 1 million (Source: SteamDB).
Monster Hunter Wilds is out now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam).
