While some video game developers have a hard time choosing their favorite creation, Hideki Kamiya has no qualms about saying which version of Okami he prefers. In response to a fan asking for advice on this topic, the game’s director replied that Okami HD was the best way to experience Amaterasu’s epic adventure.
To clear up some confusion, Kamiya reminds the fan that Okami on the Nintendo Wii was not the original version of the game. That honor belongs to the PlayStation 2 version, which first released in Japan on April 20, 2006. The Nintendo Wii version was created afterwards primarily by American game studio Ready At Dawn Studios, and was made to appease fans who thought the Wii Remote’s motion-based controls would be perfect for the game.
While the Wii version had a tumulus development process, controlling the Celestial Brush with the Wii Remote proved just as intuitive as fans thought. The same could not be said about platforming and combat, however, which is one of the reasons why Kamiya prefers the HD version (remastered by Capcom and Japanese indie game studio HexaDrive). Now that Kamiya and his team at CLOVERS are developing an Okami sequel, players who have yet to experience the first game should give Okami HD a shot.
Okami is available on PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii. Okami HD is available on the PlayStation 3 and 4, Windows, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Amazon Luna.
