Parasite Eve and Chrono Trigger director makes surprise appearance on Japanese national television, and it’s not about games

Parasite Eve and Chrono Trigger director Takashi Tokita was on TV this week, surprising both gamers and industry peers, like Yoko Taro.

Square Enix game creator Takashi Tokita is known for being the director of cult classics like the original Parasite Eve and Chrono Trigger. So, when he appeared on Japanese TV on February 2, many were probably hoping he would be talking about games. Rather, Tokita and his family appeared in a disaster prevention segment on national broadcaster NHK, surprising Japanese netizens and industry peers, including NieR creator Yoko Taro.

Post translation: Square Enix’s Tokita is on NHK… but it’s a disaster prevention program…
Post translation: For some reason, Takashi Tokita and his family are appearing on a disaster prevention program on NHK.

With over 2000 active fault lines, Japan is known for its frequent earthquakes, and it is important to know what to do if a big one affects you. NHK regularly broadcasts segments and programs related to disaster prevention- with Tokita and his family showing up on morning show segment “Ashita no mamoru navi” this week.

In a post on X, Tokita addressed the comments and explained how he ended up on the program and what he learned from the experience of preparing with his family for a disaster.

Post translation: The director is a friend of mine, so we worked together on this program. How can we survive for 3 days on the food we have at home?! As well as foodstuff, we needed more water and gas canisters than we thought. Everyone, make sure you stock up!

There are a lot of things to consider when preparing for a real-life disaster, but at least you hopefully won’t have to run away from those creepy mutated rats from Parasite Eve…
