Sonic x Shadow Generations becomes successful part of Sega’s new IP strategy, selling over 2 million copies worldwide

Sega have revealed that Sonic x Shadow Generations has sold over 2 million copies worldwide across all platforms (including physical and downloads).

Sonic x Shadow Generations is a remake of 2011’s Sonic Generations, coupled with the brand-new companion game Shadow Generations. Since its release in October last year, Sonic x Shadow Generations has amassed positive feedback from critics and players alike, earning a Metascore of 80

Earlier this month, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 quickly became the highest grossing Sonic film, racking up box office takings worldwide. It seems that the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie may have boosted sales of Sonic x Shadow Generations, pushing it over the 2 million mark.

The Sonic IP is playing a key role in Sega’s current business strategy, which aims to make Sega a global company again by aggressively expanding transmedia IP development. As part of this “Mega Drive” to strengthen Sega, the company has been pursuing a Sonic IP transmedia rollout. This kicked off with the April 2024 launch of Paramount+ series Knuckles, followed by Sonic x Shadow Generations in October, and the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie in late December. The next part of this rollout is the FTP game Sonic Rumble, coming this winter.

Sonic x Shadow Generations is available on PS4/PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store).
