S-Game, the China-based developer of the upcoming PS5/PC action game Phantom Blade Zero, allegedly received a large amount of additional investment following the explosive success of Game Science’s Black Myth: Wukong. This was reported by Shenzhen-based gaming consultant and game media writer Daniel Camilo, who cited two insiders involved in Phantom Blade Zero’s development as sources.
Phantom Blade Zero is a “kung-fu punk” action RPG that was first announced in May 2023 and subsequently attracted a lot of attention for its sleek visuals and action. Talked about as “the next big action RPG to come out of China after Black Myth: Wukong,” Phantom Blade Zero is S-Game’s first AAA game aimed for worldwide distribution.
While the title has already been in development for a while now, Camilo says that its creators allegedly started receiving significant amounts of extra funding immediately prior to Black Myth: Wukong’s launch, thanks to its performance indicators and the large hype surrounding it. Then, following Black Myth: Wukong’s tremendous success after its release, investors flocked to S-Game in an attempt to ride the “new wave” of AAA game development from China. S-Game allegedly even had to turn down some investment offers.
It’s interesting to see the success of Black Myth: Wukong lead to a sudden rise in investors’ interest in Chinese game studios and AAA game development. It will be exciting to see how many new global titles come out of China thanks to this momentum.
Phantom Blade Zero is currently in development for the PC and PS5. Its release date is TBA.
