Dynasty Warriors: Origins didn’t include character customization, but the feature is not off the table for future entries, according to producer
Offering a brand-new take on the series, Dynasty Warriors: Origins puts players in the shoes of an unnamed original protagonist, rather than having them assume the role of one of the established Three Kingdom generals.
While the new approach of focusing on a fixed original protagonist has been met with positive reception from players for making the story feel more coherent, there has been some disappointment over the fact that the game gives you close to no freedom over the appearance of the controlled character. Dynasty Warriors: Origins does away with the series’ character creation feature, meaning that you can’t freely create a character of your liking to play as. Moreover, the game includes little in the way of cosmetics.
Addressing this point in an interview published on the PlayStation.Blog, series producer Tomohiko Sho says that there were actually several voices within the company in favor of adding character customization to Origins, and that the feature was under consideration since the beginning of development.
However, with Origins being positioned as a grand reboot of the series that’s meant to attract new players, Sho wanted to make sure that the game’s story and worldview gets clearly conveyed. “For this title, we wanted to create a character that best matches the story and setting. If each player were free to customize the protagonist’s appearance and gender to their liking, this could lead to deviations from the kind of world we’re trying to portray.”
In other words, Omega Force’s reasoning for doing away with character creation was that they wanted to provide players with a protagonist that best matches the context of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
However, this doesn’t mean that character customization is off the table for the series’ future entries – Sho commented that there were various opinions on the matter internally, and that if he were to oversee the creation of a sequel, he would consider adding the feature, depending on the game’s story.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins is available for the PC (Steam), PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
