Japanese mobile game teaches masterclass in marketing with viral ad of Jojo character just standing still for 10 seconds
Japanese mobile game Monster Strike recently launched an in-game collaboration event with the Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind anime. But rather than the crossover itself, it’s the ad announcing it that’s gone viral, reaching far beyond its intended target audience.
The ad in question (linked above) has been viewed over 16 million times in only six days and generated much buzz across Japanese social media. Curiously, it features a more or less completely still frame of Golden Wind’s protagonist Giorno Giovanna for most of its duration. Giorno just deadpans the camera in silence before uttering an anticlimactic “Buon Giorno,” which is Italian for “Hello.” Meanwhile, the narrator introduces him as “Giorno Giovanna. The more you look at him, the more you fall for him.”
The internet has judged this combination of surreal lines, complete stillness, and strange pauses to be pure cinematic genius, causing the ad to become the franchise’s most viewed video to date by a large margin. Viewers have pointed out further comical details, like the tiny flicker of the sea in the background that happens the moment Giorno speaks, the prospect of Monster Strike hiring Giorno’s voice actor for such a brief line, and the fact that they essentially made the JJBA series’ official narrator call Giorno dreamy.
Monster Strike’s collaboration with Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind will run from January 11 to February 2.
