Metal Gear Solid fans stunned by singing voice of Snake’s Japanese VA
While English language players of the Metal Gear Solid games are used to the iconic, gruff voice of David Hayter bringing life to a whole generation of Snakes, Japanese MGS fans are likewise accustomed to the gravitas of Akio Otsuka’s deep voice. Although Otsuka is well known for voicing various anime and game characters, fans were pleasantly surprised recently to discover that he can also sing.
The official Japanese Rugby League One X account shared a video of Akio Otsuka singing the Japanese national anthem before Saturday’s opening match between Hanazono Kintetsu Liners and Toyota Industries Shuttles Aichi.
Otsuka belting out the national anthem on a cold winter’s day seems to have impressed some Japanese MGS fans. Reactions included “Snaaaake! What a nice voice. I found myself listening intently,” and “Very cool, so deep. It’s like Snake himself is singing.” Many other comments echoed these with people mentioning how Snake/Big Boss’s voice was “the best,” “cool” or “wonderful”. As Naomi Hunter might say, “Impressive, Snake.”
It seems Otsuka might be a fan of the Hanazono Kintetsu Liners, judging from this enthusiastic photo he posted on his official X account prior to singing on the rugby field.
Akio Otsuka will also be reprising his role as Naked Snake in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.
For those wondering what Snake’s English VA David Hayter sounds like when singing (albeit in a comic musical style)- he did an amusing Grinch parody with Liquid Snake’s VA Cam Clarke last Christmas.
