PS5 gets nostalgic menu and startup themes for PlayStation’s 30th Anniversary

Sony has brought some serious nostalgia to PS5 with the December 3 feature update. This adds limited-time themes to celebrate all PlayStation console generations to mark PlayStation’s 30th Anniversary.

The original Sony PlayStation 1 console launched in Japan on December 3, 1994, getting released in Europe and North America the following year. Over the next decade, the PlayStation 1 would cement Sony as a major player in the video game industry, boasting classic exclusives like Final Fantasy VII to IX, Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon and many more. To mark the PS1’s 30th birthday, Sony also dropped the nostalgic video below, which features many popular games and characters from throughout the last three decades.

The latest PS5 update allows you to tap into that nostalgia each time you boot up your console. Five brand new menu themes have been added to the PS5 so that you can choose your favorite console generation. The original PlayStation theme features the chunky gray console along the bottom of the menu, while the PlayStation 2 theme brings back those iconic blocks and cubes. Likewise, the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 themes mimic the menu designs of their specific consoles. For those who can’t pick favorites, the PlayStation 30th Anniversary theme features the PlayStation buttons across the bottom of the screen. All themes also come with enough nostalgic sounds to give you goosebumps- including the start-up screens.

These themes are available for a limited time only (at the time of writing, Sony hasn’t specified when they will end), so PS5 owners are advised to make the most of them while they can. At the same time, Sony is also running a PlayStation 30th Anniversary sale on the PlayStation Store.

Sony previously released an extremely limited 30th Anniversary version of the PS5 Pro in classic PS1 colors- with scalper-combatting measures in place if you tried to preorder it in Japan.
