The Super Mario Bros. Movie gets first TV screening in Japan on December 31
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (the animated one) is finally being aired on Japanese television more than a year after it was first screened in Japanese cinemas. The film will be available to watch on Fuji TV from 7 PM on December 31, giving stay-at-home families and children-at-heart something to watch as they welcome the new year:
Produced by Universal Pictures, Illumination, and Nintendo, The Super Mario Bros. Movie follows American-Italian brothers Mario and Luigi as they work alongside Princess Peach to defeat the evil Bowser. In addition to various nods to the video game source material, the film has a unique twist in that part of it is set in Brooklyn, where the brothers set up their plumbing business.
Unlike the infamous 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. flick that got rereleased in Japanese theaters last year, the animated movie was well-received, grossing 10 billion Japanese Yen (roughly 71 million USD) in its first month, according to IMDB. While The Super Mario Bros. Movie is available on streaming service Amazon Prime, the December 31 screening on Fuji TV will mark its first full showing on Japanese television.
