Astro Bot has significantly widened the PS5 playerbase, according to Sony

In a recent report on its PlayStation Studios, Sony revealed that Astro Bot has significantly widened their userbase and attracted new players- particularly families and younger gamers.

Developed by PlayStation Studios’ Team ASOBI, Astro Bot is an accessible, family-friendly platformer featuring Sony’s mascot character of the same name. Releasing on September 6 for the PS5, the game has garnered a Metacritic score of 94 (and has also been praised by Samsh Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai).

Although Sony’s overall sales of first party games are expected to be lower this financial year, the company highlighted the strong performance of Astro Bot in its recent Quarter 2 results presentation. Apparently, the PS5 exclusive sold over 1.5 million units in the first 9 weeks after launch. For 37% of Astro Bot purchasers, it was the first Sony first-party title they had bought in 2 years.

Not only did Astro Bot sell well, but Sony also revealed that more families and younger users purchased the game compared to other PlayStation titles. Sony concludes that Astro Bot has significantly widened their PS5 userbase by attracting new players.

As for the future of PlayStation Studios, Sony mentions that they plan to launch a major single player title every year, starting with Ghost of Yotei, the much-anticipated follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, in 2025.
