Steins;Gate Re:Boot to bring the original time-travel adventure to modern platforms
On October 27, MAGES.inc announced that it will be rebooting the original Steins;Gate visual novel that was first released on the Xbox 360 in 2009. Details on the aptly named Steins;Gate Re:Boot are scarce, with nothing but a teaser trailer and some new art to confirm its existence (you can also hear Kanako Ito’s “Skyclad Observer” in the trailer):
Steins;Gate follows the story of Rintaro Okabe, a self-proclaimed mad scientist who accidentally discovers time travel. Along with fellow members of the Future Gadget Laboratory, Rintaro struggles to unravel the secrets of time travel and prevent deaths that would otherwise have not occurred without his meddling. Steins;Gate starts quite slow and lighthearted before eventually getting darker and more philosophical, covering themes such as PTSD and human existence among others.
Steins;Gate was so successful that it spawned numerous spin-offs and sequels, many of which echo the themes of the original. Anime adaptations for Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0 were also created in 2011 and 2018 respectively and were met with similar success.
Unlike the visual novel Steins;Gate Elite which reuses footage from the Steins;Gate anime and adds new animations for story beats that weren’t included in the cartoon, Steins;Gate Re:Boot looks like a full-fledged reboot of the original. This means character stills, compelling music, and lots and lots of readable dialogue.
Steins;Gate Re:Boot is scheduled to be released sometime in 2025. Supported platforms have yet to be revealed by the developers.
