GeGeGe no Kitaro inspired co-op survival horror game announced for 2025
Toei Animation announced NOROI KAGO: the Grudged Domain on September 5. Developed by Toydium, the upcoming indie horror game is based on the GeGeGe no Kitarō anime series. It’s set to launch sometime in 2025 for the PC (Steam). The game will be available in English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese.
NOROI KAGO: the Grudged Domain is an online co-op survival horror game that supports up to 4 players. Players are trapped in a cursed realm haunted by Yokai, supernatural creatures inspired by Japanese folklore. The objective is to look for a way to escape while fending off incoming attacks from the Yokai.
To break the seal trapping them in the cursed domain, players will need to perform a ritual. Items necessary for the ritual are hidden throughout the game field, and their locations change in each playthrough. In addition, players will need to search for items that can stall the Yokai or revive fallen teammates.
NOROI KAGO will put you up against not only Yokai, but an “agonizing curse” that gradually turns you into a half-Yokai monster. This process can hinder the team from escaping safely, so coordinated co-op play is key.
The art direction of NOROI KAGO is strongly influenced by the work of Shigeru Mizuki, the original creator of GeGeGe no Kitarō. This influence is reflected in high contrast values, black and white tones and other characteristics of the mangaka’s work. The upcoming title’s trailer even hints at Kitaro himself making an appearance.
