Square Enix to end service for Triple Triad in the Final Fantasy Portal app worldwide

Square Enix have announced that they will remove Triple Triad from the Final Fantasy Portal App at the end of November 2024. The popular card game that debuted in Final Fantasy VIII has been a feature of the Portal App since 2015.

In their notice about the end of service, Square Enix apologized, citing quality concerns as the reason for removing this part of the app. “It recently became clear we would not be able to maintain the same standards going forward, and as a result we have decided to remove the game from the app.”

All Triple Triad cards will cost zero points to purchase from now until the game’s removal on November 25 (November 26 depending on the time zone). After November, players can still enjoy Triple Triad in Final Fantasy XIV (as well as in Final Fantasy VIII, of course). The other features of the Portal App will continue to be available.

Japanese players reacted with surprise to the news on social media, with many hoping they could complete their card collections in time. “I only just found out that I can play it on the Portal App because of the (Final Fantasy VII) Ever Crisis campaign” one player lamented. “I have been playing it every day recently… I’ve already collected 607 cards out of 834 so I’m pretty satisfied… I wonder if I can collect them all before the servers shut down?” The overall spirit of the reactions was one of sadness but also gratitude that the game had run for 9 years and brought players hours of fun, as one user summed up: “I’ve been playing Triple Triad on the FF Portal app for a loooong time… I started playing in the hope of getting some cards from the FF14 collaboration, but I ended up having fun! Thank you!”

On the topic of Final Fantasy card games, Final Fantasy VII Remake’s developers have confirmed that a revamped version of Queen’s Blood will appear in the last part of the trilogy
